Let's start with something that might surprise you: studies consistently show that up to 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Not close to the wrong size — actually wrong. Too small in the cup, too big in the band, or both. And the consequences aren't just about style. They affect your posture, your comfort, your health, and yes — your confidence.

At Bras By MaMloo, we speak to hundreds of women across South Africa every year. From Johannesburg to Ladysmith, from Durban to Polokwane. And the story is almost always the same: she's been wearing the wrong size for years, nobody ever told her, and she thought that was just how bras felt.

It doesn't have to be that way. Today, we're going to change that for you.

Why Is This Happening to So Many of Us?

The bra sizing problem in South Africa — and globally — has several root causes, and none of them are your fault:

  • Department stores rarely stock above an F cup. So women with larger cup sizes squeeze into what's available, simply because they don't know anything else exists.
  • Traditional sizing guides are outdated. The method most shops and guides use hasn't been significantly updated in decades. Bodies are more diverse than any simple formula accounts for.
  • Professional fittings are rare. Outside of a few specialist boutiques in major cities, most South African women have never had a proper bra fitting. They just pick what looks right on the hanger.
  • We inherit bad information. Our mothers, our friends, ourselves — we all learnt from each other. If the person who taught you was in the wrong size, you likely started there too.

The 8 Signs Your Bra Doesn't Fit

Your body tells you constantly. You just might not have known what the signs meant.

Your straps dig in or leave marks
Shoulder straps should carry almost no weight. If they're digging in, your band isn't doing its job — usually because it's too big.
The band rides up at the back
The band should sit straight and firmly around your body. Riding up means the band is too large — and you're losing all support.
Your cups gap or wrinkle
Empty space in the cups means the cup is too large — or you're wearing the wrong style for your breast shape.
You have "double breast" or spillage
When breast tissue spills over the top or sides of the cup, your cup size is almost certainly too small. This is one of the most common issues we see.
Back, neck or shoulder pain by end of day
When a bra doesn't support properly, your muscles compensate — causing real pain. This is a health issue, not just a comfort one.
The underwire pokes or sits on breast tissue
Underwire should sit flat against your chest wall — not on breast tissue. Poking means the cup is too small or the bra shape doesn't suit your body.
You can't wait to take it off
A well-fitting bra should be so comfortable you barely notice it's there. If you're counting minutes until you can remove it — it doesn't fit.
Your clothes don't sit right
A bra that doesn't fit correctly affects how every piece of clothing looks on you — lumps, bumps, and lines that don't belong there.

How many of these apply to you? If you recognise even two or three, it's very likely your bra size needs to change. The good news: it's an easy fix once you know what you're looking for.

The "One Size Up" Rule — and Why It Changes Everything

Here's the most important thing we teach at MaMloo: cup size is relative to band size. This is where almost everyone gets confused.

Most women think cup letters are fixed measurements. D is D. E is E. But that's not how it works. A 34D and a 36D are completely different cups. The number refers to your band size, and the cup size only makes sense in relation to it.

This is called "sister sizing." When you go up a band size, you go down a cup letter — but the actual volume stays the same. So a 36DD and a 34E hold exactly the same amount of breast tissue. They're sisters.

What this means in practice: if you're wearing a 36C and the cups are overflowing, you could try a 34DD, a 36D, or even a 38C — depending on what's causing the issue. This is why professional fittings matter so much. You can't just guess from a formula.

Why Cup Sizes Are Bigger Than You Think (DD is Not "Large")

South African women — especially those with larger busts — are often surprised to discover they're an F, G, or H cup. They've spent their whole lives in Ds because that's the biggest readily available, and they thought "DD is already huge."

It isn't. The UK cup sizing system (which most quality bras use) goes: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K. That's fourteen cup sizes. Most major department stores stock up to F at best. We specialise in DD through K — because those women exist, they matter, and they deserve the same access to beautiful, comfortable, supportive bras as anyone else.

If you've been cramming yourself into a D or DD cup out of necessity rather than fit — you may be multiple cup sizes away from what actually suits your body.

What a Professional Fitting Actually Looks Like

We understand that the idea of a "fitting" can feel uncomfortable. For many South African women, bra shopping is already stressful — the thought of having someone measure you or see you in your bra adds another layer of anxiety.

Here's the truth about how we work at MaMloo:

  • We can guide you through measuring yourself at home, via WhatsApp voice note or video call — fully private, on your terms.
  • At our pop-up events, fittings are done in a respectful, private, comfortable environment by women who've done this hundreds of times.
  • There is no judgement. No rushing. No pressure to buy anything. We want you to leave feeling better about yourself — whether you purchase or not.
  • We speak your language — English, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans. We're South African women, just like you.

The Bottom Line

You've been living with discomfort, pain, or just the quiet feeling that something wasn't quite right. And you've been blaming yourself — your body, your size, the way you're built.

Stop.

The problem was never your body. The problem was a bra that didn't know how to fit it. And that's something we can fix — together, quickly, and with care.

You deserve to feel held, supported, and beautiful in your own skin. Every single day. That starts with the right bra.

We'll show you exactly how to get there.
